    1. Develop The Best And/Or Interesting Content

    Today, there’s very few to no shortcut in getting more inbound links besides actually having a content worth linking to. Most grey (and even more black)-hat link building tactics no longer work nowadays with the updates on Google algorithm. So, either aim to have the absolute best, most informative, and in-depth content of a certain topic, or approach the topic from a unique angle not explored by others. Both are, arguably, equally difficult nowadays but is definitely do-able with proper research and effort.

    Consistency is also important. Focus on a topic, and develop quality content to target keywords surrounding the topic.

    2. Quality, Not Quantity

    It’s no longer a secret that Google nowadays take account of the quality of backlinks over quantity. However, many SEO marketers still don’t realize that getting too many backlinks— even if it’s high quality— can be counterproductive and will flag Google to penalize your site. Remember that there are now billions of sites indexed by Google, and they simply don’t have time to review each site individually even if you get, say, 20 high-quality links with legal means. Google might instead suspect your site using grey-hat or black-hat tactics and penalize it.

    So, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Aim for just 2 to 3 authoritative backlinks for each page per month. Build relationships with these high-quality sites so you’ll get more links from them in the long run (so Google will see these as natural links.)

    The idea is, while social shares are not accounted as “real” backlink (as confirmed by Google), by having more people aware of your content, there is a higher chance that some of them might give you those valuable links.

    For any mentions that do not currently link to your site, check that this is a link that you would like to pursue.
